Why I chose this topic: When tasked with creating a poster on a urinary system pathology, I selected struvite staghorn calculi, drawn by the complex mechanism of their formation and the challenges associated with their treatment. As a second-year diagnostic radiography student, I aimed to deepen my understanding of this increasingly rare condition, which can lead to significant complications if left untreated. While emphasising this variant, my research also addresses signs, symptoms, patient pathways and care considerations relevant to all patients with suspected nephrolithiasis. In addition, the comparison of imaging modalities is applicable to other types of renal calculi. This research aims to enhance patient outcomes and support my development as a future radiographer.
