A systematic literature review of advanced practice international radiotherapy and oncology

Introduction

In 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO)1 argued that, in comparison to nursing, the progress and impact of allied health professions (AHPs) working at an advanced level of practice is significantly under reported. The AHPs into Action report (2017)2 showed that those AHP professions with well-defined career progression had more significant impact in clinical practice.

Therapeutic radiographers (TRs) play a fundamental and evolving role in the delivery of radiation services for the treatment of cancer patients. Current research states that professional recognition of the role and scope of practice are fundamental in defining responsibilities, contribution to service delivery and participation in education and training programmes providing standardisation and safe practice for all3.
