Radiography – both diagnostic and therapeutic – continues to face significant pressures related to workforce supply, retention and demographic change.
Recent Society of Radiographers workforce census data (20221 and 20232) highlight vacancy rates between 8.3% and 12.8% across the radiographer and support workforce, with growing concerns around retirement risk in the coming years.
Alongside this, the use of agency staffing remains high, with up to 80% of responding departments reporting reliance on temporary staff.
These concerning figures are not new, but their persistence demonstrates an urgent need to diversify and strengthen routes into the profession. Reports from multiple programmes, including the Health Education England RePAIR3 programme, have highlighted the challenge of attrition among undergraduate learners and early career practitioners.
